Sponsor Neil for 10km charity run in Brazil

Sponsor Neil for 10km charity run in Brazil

So Neil…. Why are you running this particular 10km?
Well I happen to be out in Curitiba in November on behalf of the charity Voice for Change (Vfc), which I’m a trustee of, and the Curitiba 10km run and the marathon are on at the same time. Vfc helps needy kids, both housing them in families and working directly in the favela. There’s loads more on their website. So the run in Curitiba and the charity work was a good link for me.

And Curitiba’s in….?
Southern Brazil. It’s 3060 feet above sea level; so I’ll be coping with the altitude, hot temperatures and a bit of jet lag after the 12 hour flight. I’ll have about 3 days to prepare when I get there.

How did you start running, as you don’t look like a runner?
Ouch! Thanks for that! A friend of mine encouraged me to go running with him. Said he would go slowly. One day I gave it a try. I probably managed a kilometre, and finished bright red in the face completely out of breath. My friend hadn’t even warmed up. It made me realise how unfit I was, and that I ought to do something about it, if I was going to be there long term for the business. That was about 5 years ago.

What training are you doing now?
I run 7km twice a week around the local lanes. A few weights and some swimming on the days I don’t feel like running. Plus lots of hours gardening and fixing up the place where I live. Unfortunately, I went over on my ankle walking the dog the other day and have to rest some pulled ligaments. That’s set me back 6 weeks!

Have you been part of an organised run before?
Just once. I ran the Evesham 10km this summer. It was a spur of the moment thing and more to do with proving to myself that I could run 10km and therefore take on the Curitiba run. It was so last minute, that I got muddled as to where the check-in was. I ended up having to run from the town centre start down to the park to register and back again to start the race!! I surprised myself that I finished, but was wrecked for the next day at work.

So how do we sponsor you?
Well, you can sign up to sponsor me on the web by clicking here, or contact me at Westhilldirect.

Anything anyone can sponsor me would be fantastic. You can see I’m not a runner and this will be quite a challenge for me.

If anyone else is interested in running at future sponsorship events, just give me a call.
